Cows in the mist in the Westduinen near Camping Kotestee in Ouddorp.

Sustainability Caring for this place comes naturally

When you camp at Kotestee, you sleep in a landscape full of stories, among old oaks, green sand banks, dune grass and nature that never stands still. Here you hear no disco music, but the tapping of a woodpecker or the call of a natterjack toad. At Camping Kotestee, we believe caring for nature starts with how you treat it. That is why we keep the grounds as natural as possible, avoid unnecessary lighting and make life as easy as we can for birds, insects and bats.

Letting the landscape live

We mow some areas as little as possible so flowers and insects retain their shelter, and leave the sand banks largely undisturbed. We are a partner of Zuid-Hollands Landschap, which owns the Westduinen.

Space for wildlife

You will find nest boxes, insect hotels and bat boxes around the grounds. Green and great spotted woodpeckers, butterflies, hedgehogs and birds of prey visit every year, and we are happy to offer them a place to stay too.

Native planting

We use locally native plants wherever possible. They are not only more resilient, but also make an extra contribution to biodiversity.

A natural appearance

Only the campsite's main access road is surfaced with asphalt; other paths are gravel or grass. On permanent pitches, at least 50% of the plot must remain green rather than paved. This allows rainwater to drain and gives nature room to flourish.

No unnecessary lighting

We only use lighting where it is truly needed. This lets you see the stars at night and helps avoid disturbing nocturnal wildlife. Functional lighting in the washroom facilities uses motion sensors, so it switches off automatically.

Mindful use of water and energy

Guests pay according to their consumption, except for individual touring nights. This makes everyone aware of their use and encourages them to consume less.

Waste sorting & reuse

We have a recycling point for glass, paper, garden waste and general waste. Deposit-return bottles can be handed in separately, with the proceeds going to Zuid-Hollands Landschap.

Green propane

We use green propane to supply gas to our permanent pitches. Our gas supplier offsets CO2 emissions and invests in green projects.
